State Grid Brazil joins the Free Energy Market as a consumer customer

Partnership with CPFL will allow savings of 30% in the electricity consumption of the power transmission company

With recent regulatory changes and the expansion of the Free Energy Market, the transmission company State Grid Brazil Holding (SGBH) has adhered to the new rules as a consumer customer. In a recently signed contract, SGBH will use energy supplied by CPFL to operate 13 substations throughout the country and at its headquarters in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The five-year contracts signed with CPFL – which is part of the State Grid Corporation of China group – include the adaptation of the measurement system, executed by the São Paulo company.

In the Free Contracting Environment (ACL), regulated by the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE), qualified consumers have the freedom to choose the electricity supplier from any part of the country and with the members of the National Interconnected System (SIN), being able to negotiate bilateral contracts for the purchase and sale of electricity in the short, medium or long term, with freely negotiated conditions for the supply of energy, including price, supply term, quantity of energy, payment conditions, adjustment rates, etc.

“We identified an excellent opportunity for State Grid to migrate to the Free Market safely and with low risk, which allows us to acquire the electricity we use from generating or trading companies as an alternative to the traditional regulated market, which is currently supplied by the local concessionaire. In this way, it was possible to freely negotiate the contractual conditions, enabling savings of at least 30% in electricity in our units, starting in 2024 and in the following years”, details Jorge Bauer, Vice President of Operation and Maintenance at State Grid Brazil Holding.

The bidding process conducted by SGBH to choose the supplier involved consulting six suppliers, considering some premises seeking greater savings, lower risk and ensuring operational safety for the facilities, in view of the energy transition, in addition to meeting legal and regulatory conditions.

Sun Tao, Chairman of SGBH, also highlighted: “Another relevant requirement taken into consideration was the possibility of acquiring energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar and biomass, in another step that we take in line with ESG criteria, in accordance with State Grid's environmental responsibility and in line with the global energy transition plan”.
