State Grid Brazil Holding and ONS invest in research to optimize energy transmission from wind and solar sources

The R&D project, which also includes the participation of COPPE and Powerconsult, aims to present control strategies for intermittent generation

Rio de Janeiro – With an investment of over R$3 million, State Grid Brazil Holding (SGBH) is working with COPPE and Powerconsult, in cooperation with the National Electric System Operator (ONS), to research solutions that aim to reduce losses from wind and solar sources in the National Interconnected System (SIN). The main objective of the Research and Development (R&D) project is to develop strategies that provide greater safety, reliability and also increase the stability of the system in the use of intermittent sources, since, due to their natural characteristics, the energy generated by wind and sun cannot yet be stored efficiently.

Since both sources are directly associated with meteorological conditions to generate energy, the research seeks to present different control tools to maintain stable production in the Brazilian electrical system in the face of possible eventualities. The strategies are determined and analyzed through SIN simulations, considering critical generation scenarios and unforeseen events in the electrical grid. Based on the results, the impact and behavior of intermittent generation on the system's operation is verified.

The project, which began in August 2019 and will last 28 months, aims to determine the impact and behavior of intermittent generation on the operation of the National Interconnected System (SIN). The models developed from the tests conducted by the SGBH team may be useful for ONS planning and operation studies. Scheduled for completion in December, the research aims to evaluate new methods for expanding the intermittent energy use of the Brazilian electrical system.
